The United Methodist Women is an integral part of the church. According to the 1996 edition of the Book of Discipline, "Membership is open to any woman (not necessarily just women of the United Methodist Church) who indicates her desire to belong and to participate in the global mission of the Church."

The statement of purpose is as follows:
- to know God and to experience freedom as whole persons through Jesus Christ;
- to develop a creative, supportive fellowship; and
- to expand concepts of mission through participation in the global ministries of the church.

This community of women is:
- centered in relationship with God through Jesus Christ;
- focused on ministries with women, children and youth;
- involved in mission locally and globally;
- committed to inclusiveness;
- pledged to financial support for mission through undesignated giving;
- engaged in development and use of skills for service, leadership development and personal growth;
- encouraged to work with other organizations on issues of mutual concern.

At Salem, the United Methodist's Women's budget is generated for the most part by our two Chicken Salad Luncheons usually held in the spring and fall. In addition, we receive private donations and take an offering at meetings. Our funds are expended through purchases, pledges and support as follows:
- Purchase of The Upper Room made available to anyone and found in the alcoves of the church. Large print editions are provided for shut-ins and upon request;
- Bibles are given to graduating seniors each year;
- Pledges to the church and to the district level of the United Methodist Women;
- We contribute to:
